The university hosted a comprehensive conference that brought together experts from maritime and legal sciences. The event, held on Wednesday, May 6, 2026, focused on the challenges faced by engineering personnel working on commercial vessels and the legal dimensions of these issues.
Details of the Conference
The organization commenced at 10:00 AM in the Tuzla Maritime Campus Seminar Room 2, bringing together significant figures from both academia and the maritime industry. The opening of the event was conducted by Prof. Dr. Ceyda Süral Efeçınar, Dean of the Faculty of Law at PRÜ, and Prof. Dr. Cüneyt Ezgi, Dean of the Faculty of Maritime at PRÜ. The focal point of the conference was determined to be 'Events and Legal Issues That Engineering Personnel May Encounter on Commercial Vessels.'
Experience Transfer from a Sector Veteran
The keynote speaker of the conference was Ilker Meşe, Chief Engineer of Ship Machinery Operations and Founding Partner of ILKFER Group, who has served the maritime sector for many years both at sea and on land. Born in Ayancık, Sinop, Ilker Meşe graduated with honors from the Maritime Academy in 1977. In the early years of his career, he served as a third engineer on the vessels 'Gediz,' 'Fırat,' 'Meriç,' 'Kocaeli,' and 'Gaziantep,' owned by D.B. Deniz Nakliyatı. He also worked as a second engineer on the 'Adıyaman' tanker and the 'Şükrü Okan' vessel of the same company. Transitioning to the private sector in 1983, he worked as a control engineer in the construction of the vessels 'Boras' and 'Kınalı,' eventually rising to the position of chief engineer on these ships. Meşe's extensive maritime background facilitated a more practical and experiential understanding of the legal issues discussed at the conference.

He has published over ten books sharing his knowledge and experiences related to the maritime industry within the ILKFER Group. He has initiated significant social projects such as the ILKFER Maritime Museum, ILKFER Maritime Library, and ILKFER Art Center to preserve maritime history. He continues to transfer his practical knowledge from the field to the next generation of mariners as a visiting faculty member at the Maritime Faculties of ITU, Dokuz Eylul University, and Yıldız Technical University. Ilker Meşe's presentation, which painted a comprehensive picture by relating the challenges faced by engineering personnel to legal regulations, garnered great interest from the participants. The conference successfully concluded with discussions, a question-and-answer session, and a closing ceremony held at 11:30 AM.
