Şadan Kaptanoğlu, İMEAK Chamber of Shipping candidate, calls for a results-driven approach to tackle challenges in Turkish shipping and enhance competitiveness.

One of the leading figures in the maritime sector, Captain Şadan Kaptanoğlu, met with the maritime press following his announcement of candidacy for the Presidency of the Board of Directors of the İMEAK Chamber of Shipping. Kaptanoğlu emphasized that Turkish shipping is facing challenges simultaneously in digitalization, green transformation, alternative fuels, access to financing, increasing cost pressures, and global competition conditions, stating that the Chamber of Shipping needs to adopt a faster, more technical, more inclusive, and results-oriented structure in the new term.

“We each have our own course, but we face the same current. Our goal should not be to keep pace with change, but to manage change collaboratively.”

Kaptanoğlu expressed that Turkey has set significant goals in shipping. Becoming a regional logistics hub, transforming into a transfer center, renewing and expanding fleet capacity, strengthening ship and yacht construction and repair-maintenance capabilities, and developing maritime tourism and service exports are among the key headings of this vision. He emphasized that these goals can only be realized through the collective will of all actors in the sector and stated that the Chamber of Shipping also needs to reposition itself appropriately in this process.

“Producing activities is not the same as producing results.”

Holding meetings, preparing reports, and creating agendas are certainly important; however, true success is measured by the tangible results these efforts yield in the field. What the maritime sector needs today are solutions that touch the daily lives of members, reduce costs, accelerate processes, and enhance competitiveness.

Kaptanoğlu's aim is to transform the Chamber of Shipping into an organization that directs its energy towards measurable results and lasting benefits rather than mere visibility. With this understanding, the goal is for the DTO to evolve from a passive institution that merely “notes problems” into a proactive center that mobilizes the collective intelligence of the sector.

“We are not confining the Chamber of Shipping to the classic chamber mold.”

In Kaptanoğlu's vision, the Chamber of Shipping is positioned as a strategic intelligence platform that manages the international visibility of the Turkish maritime ecosystem, enhances transformation capacity, and produces concrete solutions for its members. This structure is based on an innovative and inclusive management approach that combines the strength of elected representation with public-NGO-private sector coordination.

Kaptanoğlu stated that he sees the responsibility of merging past experiences with the vision of the future as fundamental during the candidacy process. He emphasized that they respectfully embrace the contributions of everyone who has worked in the sector to date, viewing competition as an opportunity to advance Turkish shipping further.

“Green transformation is no longer a choice; it is the new reality of shipping.”

Kaptanoğlu expressed that they aim for a DTO understanding that will not leave its members alone in the areas of decarbonization, alternative fuels, energy efficiency, and green financing. He underscored that this transformation should be seen not only as a cost but as a new competitive field for Turkish shipping.

In his statement, Kaptanoğlu highlighted eight strategic steps that will carry Turkish shipping into the future, listing them as adapting to the changing world, a new era in representation, concrete services that touch members, being a compass for the sector in green transformation, a strong and continuous voice in the international arena, public-private sector-NGO coordination, equal interest in every branch and profession, and opening doors for youth and women.

Kaptanoğlu concluded his statement with the following words: “Our goal is clear. To transform the Chamber of Shipping into an institution that listens to its members, understands their needs, produces concrete solutions, derives its strength from its members, and represents Turkish shipping more powerfully in the world.”
