Rescue efforts for a stranded humpback whale in Germany's Baltic Sea have ceased, with authorities declaring its condition critical and no chance of survival.
Rescue efforts for the humpback whale stranded in the shallow waters along Germany's Baltic Sea coast have been completely halted as of April 8. Authorities have stated that the animal's condition has reached a critical level and that there is no longer any chance of survival.
Rescue operations have been terminated.
Interventions carried out by expert teams for several days were assessed to pose a risk of further harm to the whale, leading to the cessation of operations. Recent observations reported that the whale has significantly weakened, lost much of its mobility, and is experiencing irregular breathing.
The area has been secured.
Authorities have restricted the area where the whale is located with a safety perimeter of approximately 500 meters, closing it off to maritime traffic. The aim is to prevent the animal from experiencing stress in its final moments and to block external interventions.
The process is being monitored.
Scientists and environmental teams continue to monitor the whale's condition from a distance. At this stage, no rescue interventions are planned, and the process is allowed to proceed naturally.
Experts emphasize that this incident once again highlights the risks faced by large marine mammals that become disoriented in shallow waters.
