On March 18, 1915, the Çanakkale Victory reshaped history, marking a pivotal moment for Turkey and the Allied forces' defeat at Gallipoli.

Exactly 111 years ago, on March 18, 1915, a unique heroic saga was written that changed the course of world history and laid the foundations of modern Turkey. The 'invincible' navies of the time, aiming to cross the Dardanelles and occupy Istanbul while delivering aid to their ally Russia, were defeated in the face of the determination of the Turkish soldier.

    A Saga Written at Sea

The Allied Powers escalated their attacks, which had begun on February 19, 1915, to their highest level on March 18. The massive fleet under the command of Admiral de Robeck believed it could force its way through the Dardanelles. However, the accurate fire of the Turkish artillery and the 26 strategic mines laid by the Nusret Mine Ship the night before disrupted the plans of the invading forces. The sinking of the battleships Bouvet, Irresistible, and Ocean became the first major lesson for the Allied Powers, teaching them that 'the Dardanelles cannot be passed!'

    The Rebirth of a Nation

March 18 is not only a military success; it is the day a nation shaken by the Balkan Wars regained its self-confidence. This victory not only extended the duration of World War I by at least two years but also accelerated the collapse of Tsarist Russia and instilled hope for independence in many oppressed nations under colonial rule.

Atatürk and the Spirit of the National Struggle

In the land battles that began after the naval victory, the historic order given by Lieutenant Colonel Mustafa Kemal to the 57th Regiment on April 25, 1915, at Gallipoli Arıburnu, to stop the enemy's advance and gain time: 'I do not command you to attack; I command you to die!' materialized the resistance that proved the love of the Turkish people for their homeland to the whole world. The spirit of unity displayed at Gallipoli heralded the National Struggle that would begin a few years later and the establishment of the Republic of Turkey.

Today, on the occasion of March 18 Martyrs' Remembrance Day and the Gallipoli Naval Victory, we respectfully commemorate all our martyrs, especially Gazi Mustafa Kemal Atatürk and his comrades, who made this land a homeland.
