Saathane Bazaar offers a variety of fish at reasonable prices, though sales dip during Ramadan as the season nears its end.
The fishermen of the historic Saathane Bazaar stated that there is a wide variety of fish available at the stalls and that the prices are at a level suitable for the purchasing power of the citizens.
They noted that fish sales decrease during Ramadan and that the fish season is approaching its end after Ramadan. The fishermen remarked that it is a bountiful period for consuming fish. Köse said, 'Ramadan is approaching. There are only a few days left until the end of the fish season. Therefore, now is the perfect time to eat fish.'
Providing information about fish prices, fisherman Hasan Köse stated, 'Salmon fish ranges from 250 to 350 lira depending on its size. Sea bream is sold for around 450 lira, while sea bass is approximately 500 lira. Horse mackerel ranges from 100 to 150 lira. Whiting starts at 150 lira and can go up to 350 lira. Anchovy is 130 lira, and mullet is between 100 and 150 lira.'
Köse mentioned that prices can vary from time to time depending on the abundance of fish, expressing that fish is more economical and healthier compared to red meat. He continued, 'A kilo of fish can easily feed a family of four. Fish is natural, additive-free, and very rich in vitamins and proteins. We recommend that citizens consume plenty of fish before Ramadan.'
Emphasizing that the anchovy season is nearing its end, Köse stated, 'Anchovy is slowly coming to an end. Most of the anchovies at the stalls are frozen products. Nevertheless, horse mackerel, whiting, and other types of fish are meeting the demand of the citizens.'
Köse added that aside from anchovy, citizens prefer horse mackerel, whiting, and red mullet the most. Fisherman Muhammed Kıyak also reminded that the fish season will end on April 15, and therefore, the variety of fish may decrease, advising citizens to consume fish.
