Laboratory monkey prices in China soar as biotech demand skyrockets, with crab-eating macaques leading the surge, reports South China Morning Post.

Prices for laboratory monkeys in China have reached record highs amid booming demand from the biotech industry, reported Hong Kong's South China Morning Post.

Beijing-based Joinn Laboratories stated that its first-half net profit attributable to shareholders would surge by 1377.4 percent year on year, driven by higher pricing for laboratory animals. Analysts have singled out crab-eating macaques as the main growth driver.

Kaiyuan Securities analyst Yu Ruyi noted that the costs of lab primates began rising in mid-2025. Survey data indicated that each crab-eating macaque fetched CNY90,000 at that time, underscoring the soaring demand for preclinical testing in drug development.
