A fire on the Espirito Santo Express, traveling from Singapore to Santos, was contained on October 15, with significant cargo damage expected.
A fire that broke out on the Espirito Santo Express, en route from Singapore to Brazil's Port of Santos, was brought under control on October 15. Hapag-Lloyd, the charterer of the vessel, communicated its damage assessment to customers on October 30, which was reported by Seatrade Maritime on November 2.
Based on information from the shipowner Seaspan, Hapag-Lloyd expects significant damage or total loss for the majority of the cargo. The company indicated that taking the vessel to a port of refuge and assessing the damage on-site will take time. A definitive assessment of the condition of individual containers has not yet been made.
Hapag-Lloyd will contact the cargo owners regarding the containers that are salvageable once the ship reaches port and the initial inspection is completed. A damage survey will also be organized for these cargoes.
