A Ukrainian drone attack on Ust-Luga Port caused damage and a fire, prompting emergency response teams to the scene on September 1.
Ust-Luga Port, one of Russia's most important export centers in the Baltic Sea, was targeted by a new Ukrainian drone attack on the morning of September 1. Following the attack, damage occurred in the port area, and a fire broke out. Leningrad Region Governor Aleksandr Drozdenko announced that emergency teams were dispatched to the scene.
In their initial statements, Russian authorities reported that 44 drones were shot down over the region, while later statements indicated that this number had increased to 52. It was later reported that the fire at the port was brought under control and that there were no injuries in the attack.
It is still unclear which facility at the port was directly damaged and the extent of the damage. Ust-Luga serves as a critical Baltic gateway through which a significant portion of Russia's strategic export cargoes, including crude oil, petroleum products, coal, LNG, gas condensate, and fertilizers, are dispatched.
Production at the YANOS refinery may also have been affected.
Reports indicate that the attack may have also impacted YANOS, one of Russia's major oil refineries. According to information relayed by Splash, two of the three crude oil distillation units at the refinery were rendered inoperative following the attack. This information has not yet been independently verified in detail.
Ust-Luga has previously been targeted by Ukrainian drone attacks. In attacks in March, a fire broke out at Novatek's gas condensate facility, and satellite images indicated that at least eight storage tanks were damaged or completely destroyed. On August 14, the port and Novatek-related facilities were targeted again.
Maritime significance: The renewed targeting of Ust-Luga indicates that security risks in Russia's energy and raw material exports via the Baltic are increasingly rising. Russia's recent increase in underwater hull inspections for tankers using the port also suggests that security measures in the Baltic have been tightened.
