FedEx plans to return its grounded MD-11 cargo planes to service by May 31, collaborating with Boeing and the FAA following a fatal UPS crash.
FedEx announced its plans to return the grounded MD-11 cargo planes to service by May 31. The company is working closely with Boeing and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) following a deadly crash of a United Parcel Service (UPS) jet in November, as reported by Reuters.
The company stated that inspections and maintenance are being coordinated to ensure the aircraft can safely re-enter service. UPS confirmed that it retired its remaining MD-11 fleet of more than two dozen jets at the end of last year, accelerating its transition to Boeing 767s.
The crash at Louisville Airport resulted in the tragic loss of 15 lives, including three crew members, and prompted the grounding of the MD-11 model.
Investigators revealed that a cracked part found on the UPS jet had been flagged in a Boeing service letter more than 10 years earlier, raising concerns about long-standing safety issues associated with this aircraft type.
