The EIA process for Karasu Port's expansion project has begun, aiming to enhance capacity and logistics infrastructure in Sakarya.
The Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) process for the capacity increase and expansion project planned for Karasu Port, located in the Karasu district of Sakarya, has officially begun.
According to the project file prepared, the aim is to significantly enlarge the current operational area of the port, construct new docks, and strengthen the logistics infrastructure. The project also plans to implement sea filling, dredging works, new storage areas, and railway connections.
According to information provided by officials, it is anticipated that the number of docks, currently at 4, will be increased to 10, while the port area is expected to be expanded to over approximately 1 million square meters. Thus, the goal is to enhance the capacity of Karasu Port in the Black Sea trade route and to establish it as one of the logistics centers in the region.
Following the submission of the EIA application file to the relevant ministry, the review and evaluation process has commenced. During this process, institutional opinions will be gathered, technical assessments will be conducted, and the environmental impacts of the project will be examined in detail.
Industry representatives evaluating the project state that upon completion of the investment, Karasu's strategic importance will increase, particularly in terms of Ro-Ro transportation, foreign trade, and industrial logistics.
On the other hand, the project is being closely monitored in the region due to environmental impacts and changes in the coastal structure. It is expected that in the later stages of the EIA process, public opinions will also come to the forefront alongside those of public institutions.
