Turkey raises environmental fines by 25.49% starting January 1, 2026, to strengthen climate protection efforts.
Starting January 1, 2026, Turkey will increase administrative fines imposed under the Climate Law and the Environmental Law by 25.49%. This adjustment aligns with the revaluation rate set by the Ministry of Treasury and Finance.
The new regulation aims to enhance penalties for individuals and organizations that pollute the environment. The updated fine amounts will apply to various violations, including air, water, and soil pollution, breaches of waste management regulations, exceeding emission limits, and failure to meet environmental obligations.
Officials from the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization, and Climate Change have stated that the primary goal of this increase is to strengthen the fight against climate change, protect the environment, and achieve sustainable development goals. Stricter oversight will particularly impact industrial facilities, energy production activities, waste management processes, and transport-related emissions.
Experts emphasize that the increase in fines serves not only as a sanction but also as a significant warning for businesses and local governments regarding compliance with environmental legislation. These new fine amounts will take effect on January 1, 2026.
This regulation is viewed as a crucial step in line with Turkey's climate policies and green transformation objectives.
