The dual-fuel fleet has reached 1,126 vessels, a 28% increase year-on-year, with over US$150 billion invested, according to Riviera Maritime Media.
The number of dual-fuel containerships and vehicle carriers delivered or on order has surged to 1,126, representing a 28 percent increase year on year and more than US$150 billion in investment, reports London's Riviera Maritime Media.
The World Shipping Council stated that 400 dual-fuel vessels were on the water by December 2025, up from 218 in 2024. Orders continue to rise, with 726 ships still in the pipeline. Across the orderbook, 74 percent of vessels are dual-fuel.
The WSC Dual-Fuel Fleet Dashboard indicates that six million TEU will be methane dual-fuelled, nearly two million TEU methanol dual-fuelled, and about two million TEU propelled by conventional fuel. Methanol and methane are expected to lead future demand.
The council noted that the expansion reflects the scale of investment in the energy transition, with ships designed to switch to renewable and near-zero fuels as they become commercially viable.
