    Bulkcarrier hard aground at Kokkala

On June 7, 2017, at 2.30 a.m. the "St. Gregory" ran aground in the Laconian Gulf at Kokkala beach. The ship was carrying 30.600 tons of sulfur bound from Illichivsk via Istanbul to Sfax and had a crew of 19 on board. Obviously it didn’t change course after passing the strait between the southernmost Peloponnese and Kithira island and kept on heading straight for Kokkala instead, ending on the rocky shore. The ship suffered water ingress in the bulkhead which, however, was said to be under control. The Greek Coastguard sent two patrol boats to the scene. So far no marine pollution has been observed in the area. No injuries reported. (Photos: Zougla.gr)
