THE Brazilian truckers' strike forced LATAM Airlines Brazil to cancel 151 domestic flights between May 25 and 30, out of a scheduled total of 3,422, and prevented the airlift of 1,500 tons of cargo

THE Brazilian truckers' strike forced LATAM Airlines Brazil to cancel 151 domestic flights between May 25 and 30, out of a scheduled total of 3,422, and prevented the airlift of 1,500 tons of cargo. LATAM Airlines Group estimates that the strike cost the airline US$13 million.

Although the action did not directly involve the carrier, blockades by truckers led to a shortage of aviation fuel at the majority of the country's airports, while trucking services ground to a halt, reported London's Air Cargo News.

The 10-day strike was triggered by rising fuel prices, implemented by state-owned oil company Petrobras. The industrial action was halted after the government agreed to subsidies.

Reports say the strike resulted in shortages of food and water and 'paralysed much of the country's economy'.
