Recovery operations are underway for cargo containers lost from the Baltic Klipper near the Isle of Wight, with some washing ashore and others adrift.

Recovery operations have commenced for containers that fell from the cargo ship Baltic Klipper off the Isle of Wight, according to reports from BBC News.

On Saturday evening, sixteen containers went overboard near Nab Tower lighthouse. HM Coastguard reported that five containers washed up around Selsey, West Sussex, while others remain offshore. Helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft have been deployed to monitor their movements.

The Coastguard, along with West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service and Sussex Police, established cordons around the containers and urged the public to stay away. The Maritime & Coastguard Agency has issued warnings to vessels navigating the Solent. Fortunately, no crew members were injured, and the cargo has been classified as non-hazardous.

This incident has disrupted shipping traffic, causing delays for the P&O Cruises vessel Iona, which was scheduled to depart from Southampton. West Sussex County Council has contracted response teams to manage the clearance of any cargo that washes ashore.

Among the containers, eight were filled with bananas, two contained avocados, one held plantain, and five were empty. The Coastguard emphasized that any recovered items must be reported to the Receiver of Wreck within 28 days to avoid legal repercussions, although perishable goods are exempt from this requirement.

Steve Wenham, a ferry worker from Portsmouth, noted that the Baltic Klipper is a refrigerated vessel specializing in soft fruits and is a regular visitor to the area. He mentioned that while sunken containers pose little risk, those that remain afloat could be hazardous.
