Cathay Cargo reports strong shipping demand and plans to expand freighter capacity to the Americas, driven by technology shipments.
Cathay Cargo, the air freight arm of the Cathay Group, reported resilient shipping demand across its global network, citing strong growth from Northeast Asia and Southeast Asia and signaling plans to add freighter capacity in the months ahead.
The performance was supported by the carrier's specialist solutions. Cathay Expert, its handling service for high-value and time-critical goods, benefited from robust semiconductor flows within Asia. Cathay Dangerous Goods, meanwhile, benefited from increased lithium battery shipments originating in Northeast Asia and the Greater Bay Area.
"Cargo demand remained resilient across our network, with strong growth from Northeast Asia and Southeast Asia," said Lavinia, a company spokesperson. "Our specialist solutions continued to perform well, with Cathay Expert benefiting from robust semiconductor flows within Asia, while Cathay Dangerous Goods was boosted by increased lithium battery shipments from Northeast Asia and the Greater Bay Area."
Both product lines address priorities that matter to cargo owners: protecting the value of sensitive goods and maintaining reliable transit for shipments that carry strict handling and compliance requirements.
Looking ahead, the carrier expects the summer holiday period to affect demand on certain routes. Even so, it anticipates that appetite for technology shipments will hold firm, reflecting the steady flow of semiconductors and electronics moving through its Asian hubs.
To meet that demand, Cathay Cargo will deploy additional freighter capacity to the Americas beginning this month. Later in the year, it plans to add further freighter capacity from Air Hong Kong, its all-cargo affiliate, on selected regional routes.
"Looking ahead, while we expect the summer holiday period will affect demand on certain routes, we anticipate that demand for technology shipments will remain robust," Lavinia said. "We will deploy additional freighter capacity to the Americas starting this month to meet customer demand, along with additional freighter capacity from Air Hong Kong on selected regional routes later this year."
The added capacity is aimed at giving shippers dependable options across key trade lanes, from long-haul links to the Americas to shorter regional connections, as they plan around seasonal shifts and sustained demand for high-technology goods.
