Azerbaijan's container shipments rose 19% to 135,000 TEU in 2025, with transit volumes increasing by 20% to 66,300 TEU, reports MENAFIN.
Azerbaijan experienced a significant increase in container shipments in 2025, with a growth of 19% to reach 135,000 TEU. Transit volumes also saw a notable rise of 20%, totaling 66,300 TEU, according to reports from Amman's MENAFIN via Trend News Agency.
Azerbaijan Railways indicated that the achievements of 2025 will influence development strategies for 2026. The number of container block-trains operating on the China-Europe route through the Middle Corridor exceeded 390, demonstrating sustained demand and reliability.
Baku International Seaport achieved a record handling of 100,000 TEU last year and has the capacity to expand its throughput to 150,000 TEU without requiring major capital investment. Officials noted that strengthening the multimodal Middle Corridor and integrating with the China Railway Container Transport Company have enhanced access to southern and eastern regions.
The Middle Corridor, also known as the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route, serves as a vital link between Asia and Europe, providing an alternative to northern and southern corridors. This route begins in China, traverses Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and Turkmenistan, crosses the Caspian Sea via Azerbaijan, and continues through Georgia and Turkey to reach Europe. By bypassing longer maritime routes, it directly connects eastern Asia to Europe.
