Russian forces attacked two cargo ships in the Black Sea, killing one sailor and raising serious maritime security concerns.
Ukrainian officials report that on January 9, Russian forces targeted two cargo ships in the Black Sea, resulting in one sailor's death and another injury. This incident has intensified concerns over maritime security in the region.
The attacks occurred amid accusations from Ukraine that Russia is deliberately targeting civilian facilities, international shipping, and food logistics. This incident followed one of the largest air assaults in the four-year conflict, during which Russia employed hypersonic missiles for the second time. Reports indicate that Russia launched hundreds of drones and missiles across Ukraine, with Kyiv being a primary target. In total, four people were reported dead and at least 25 injured in the capital.
One of the affected vessels, the Turkish-owned cargo ship Wael K, ran aground while approaching Chernomorsk Port to load grain, sustaining damage after being hit by a Russian drone. Additionally, another attack targeted the bulk carrier Ladonna, which was loading soybeans in the Greater Odessa port complex.
Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister Oleksiy Kuleba condemned these attacks on civilian vessels as war crimes. Turkish officials have previously called for de-escalation and a cessation of targeting civilian maritime traffic.
