Around 90 vessels are waiting to enter Romania's Sulina Canal, with 20 more waiting to exit to the Black Sea amid predicted bad weather.
According to Ukrainian Shipping Magazine, which relayed Kononenko's field report dated November 2, approximately 90 vessels are waiting in line for entry on the maritime side of the Sulina Canal in Romania. Kononenko estimated the number of vessels waiting to exit the Danube into the Black Sea to be around 20.
Kononenko predicts that bad weather will halt canal traffic for four days. This duration is an estimate from the industry representative. He also noted that vessels with priority passage rights could extend the waiting time for other vessels in line.
The Danube connection has been taking on a larger share of Ukraine's cargo transportation since the summer months. According to a report by Ukrinform on October 30, Transport Minister Mykola Kalashnik stated that the average monthly cargo volume at the ports of Reni, Izmail, and Ust-Dunaysk increased from 560,000 tons in the first half of the year to approximately 1.5 million tons during the July-September period.
