APM Terminals and Hateco Group secure a 50-year concession for a $1.8 billion container terminal in Da Nang, enhancing Vietnam's port capacity.
Maersk's APM Terminals and Vietnam's Hateco Group have secured a 50-year concession to develop the US$1.8 billion Lieu Chieu container terminal in Da Nang, reports New York's Journal of Commerce.
The terminal will have an annual capacity of 5.7 million TEU, with construction starting later this year. The first two berths are scheduled to open in 2028, with full completion expected by 2035.
The facility will feature eight berths with a quay length of 9,022 feet, capable of handling 18,000-TEU ships, plus a barge berth for vessels up to 5,000 tonnes. It is expected to serve Vietnam's central provinces, neighboring Laos, and transshipment traffic.
The project is the second joint venture between APM Terminals and Hateco, following the Haiphong International Container Terminal that opened last July. Da Nang will be APM Terminals' third facility in Vietnam, alongside Cai Mep International Terminal near Ho Chi Minh City.
Container lines are investing heavily in marine terminals to strengthen landside control and reduce congestion. Vietnam's rising role as a US import origin, with its share of laden inbound shipments climbing to 12 percent in 2025, has added to the appeal of new port infrastructure.
