GATEWAY Terminals India (GTI) at Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust has been implementing measures aimed at setting new industry benchmarks for productivity and service levels by working with container shipping lines and truckers to speed up the movement of cargo.
In September export volumes at the APM Terminals-operated facility rose by 14.5 per cent compared to the same month last year.
"What we are seeing is that more traffic is coming to our terminal as it can move quickly through the port," APMT Mumbai CEO Pradip Agrawal was quoted as saying in a report by the Journal of Commerce.
Over the past couple of months, the terminal has put in place a series of measures to transform archaic gate procedures and streamline truck flow.
The steps included allowing container lines and others to file cargo documentation electronically, removing the system of container seal checking by a federal security agency at the gates and setting up a dedicated lane for empty trucks arriving to pick up import cargo.
"As against a previous truck gate-entry/transaction time of five to six minutes, GTI is currently operating at two to three minutes," the company told JOC.com.
The terminal's gates are now able to handle 2,700 truck moves per day, compared with a previous peak level of 2,300. As a result, daily gate transactions have now hit an average of 4,500 TEU, peaking at up to 5,900 TEU, from a previous level of 3,500 TEU per day.
