GATEWAY Terminals India (GTI), a joint venture between APM Terminals Group and domestic railway operator Container Corporation of India (Concor) that handles most containers at Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust in Mumbai is holding on to its lead in terminal productivity.
GTI reduced cargo dwell times in October to an average of 36.8 hours for imports, down from 57.7 hours in September, representing a month-on-month improvement of 36 per cent, according to a new productivity analysis by radio-frequency identification service provider DMICDC Logistics Data Services Ltd (DLDS).
In addition, October dwell times for empty export containers decreased by 37 per cent to 41.7 hours, down from 66 hours in September, reported IHS Media.
As for laden export volumes, average dwell time in October remained relatively flat compared with the preceding month at 90 hours. However, GTI still had the best number at JNPT, according to DLDS.
Consequently, GTI's overall dwell time during October fell to 50.6 hours, down from 51.6 hours in September.
That cargo clearance speed/agility improvement is significant given that GTI accounts for up to 40 per cent of JNPT volume. Dwell time refers to the time taken for exports inside terminal gates to be loaded onto a ship and imports onto a truck or train.
Furthermore, GTI also leads in direct port delivery (DPD) handling at the port, handling 27,345 TEU of laden imports in November, out of JNPT's total DPD volume of 59,986 TEU.
The DPD programme enables importers to clear their cargo directly from the wharf within 48 hours of landing at the port, in a bid to reduce cargo dwell time, which can lead to harbour congestion and higher logistics costs.
Officials at APM Terminals Mumbai told IHS Media the terminal generated an average gross crane rate of 31.3 moves per hour and berth productivity of 106 moves per hour during November.
Statistics also show the terminal achieved five per cent year-on-year volume growth in November after handling 174,038 TEU from 41 ship calls. April-to-November volume rose by 4.4 per cent to 1.38 million TEU, out of 3.36 million TEU handled at JNPT.
With an annual container handling capacity of 2.3 million TEU, GTI docks nine weekly/regular calls. Officials say the terminal is working at full capacity and currently lacks the space needed to accommodate more calls. The facility features a 2,336-foot quay and 128 acres of yard space, and is equipped with ten twin-lifting quay cranes, 40 rubber tyre gantry cranes and three rail-mounted quay cranes.
