Antwerp pioneers night work - biggest terminals open 24/5 March 20
THE Port of Antwerp will begin to make its container terminals accessible day and night start March 20.
Night opening could be a breakthrough for mobility," said Antwerp Port Authority strategy manager Chris Coeck.
"To make a success of the initiative it is crucial for all parties involved to actively collaborate and show the necessary flexibility of operation," he said.
On March 20, container terminals on the left bank will be accessible day and night, with the Deurganck dock open around the clock.
With the new measure the terminal operators seek to spread out the truck traffic on the terminals and help to reduce traffic congestion in and around Antwerp during rush hours.
This initiative comes from the terminal operator and MSC should also lead to fewer trucks on the road during rush hours, thus helping to reduce congestion. In this way the port will contribute to smoother traffic on the road network in and around Antwerp.
