FLINDERS Adelaide Container Terminal in South Australia turned out a mixed bag of containerised cargo volumes results in 2018, with total container throughput remaining flat at 322,558 TEU.
Volumes of imported boxes rose 1.98 per cent from 2017 to stand at 149,684 TEU. The biggest contributor were FEUs, which accounted for 61.4 per cent of all import containers last year, after volumes of these larger boxes increased 8.73 per cent year on year.
Import goods contained in TEUs amounted to 50,671 TEU, or 33.9 per cent of all imported boxes last year, an increase of 5.07 per cent. Imported reefer boxes stood at 7,115 TEU and account for five per cent of total import volumes, New York FreightWaves reported.
It was a different situation on the export side. Export volumes declined by 1.73 per cent to 172,874 TEU in 2018. The export trade also generated 15,459 reefer TEUs.
As for empties, Flinders handled 73,584 TEU of empty boxes, accounting for 17.71 per cent of the total, less than in 2017.
