ABU Dhabi Terminals (ADT) says it set a new container throughput record on July 26 when it handled its three millionth TEU, the highest throughput since it commenced operations at Khalifa Port at the end of 2012.
The three millionth container was achieved while serving the 6,500-TEU Hanjin Xiamen, a ship belonging to ADT's long-term customer, Hanjin Shipping, terminal authorities announced.
The new throughput milestone comes in line with ADT's successful first half, which saw the terminal operator handle 628,000 TEU, a 36 per cent increase compared with the same period in 2014.
Volumes have been boosted by the rapid growth of polymer export and shipping lines increasing transhipment activities in the Gulf region.
Once the next expansion programme is completed in mid-2016, KPCT will have an additional three ship-to-shore cranes raising box handling capacity to 2.5 million TEU annually while speeding up turnaround times for containers moving in and out of the terminal.
