BHARAT Mumbai Container Terminals (BMCT), a unit of Singapore's PSA International and India's largest container terminal, has taken delivery of three super postpanamax quay cranes, reports Dubai's Maritime Standard.
This increases BMCT shoreside container handling units at the facility to 12, providing full Phase 1 capacity of 2.4 million TEU.
BMCT handled more than 520,000 TEU in the 2018-19 financial year, a considerable achievement for a start-up terminal that has only just completed its first full year of operations.
Planning for BMCT's Phase 2 development is currently underway. It is expected that construction work will start in the fourth quarter of 2019 and the additional facilities will be operational by the end of 2022. At that stage the annual capacity of BMCT will reach 4.8 million TEU and the terminal will occupy 200 hectares.
