THE United States' first Airbus A330 converted passenger-to-freighter (P2F) aircraft has been in service in the skies for two months now, reports Montreal's Simply Flying.
A conversion process undertaken by German manufacturer Elbe Flugzeugwerke (EFW) the converted freighter has been in the skies since before the Thanksgiving holiday. The aircraft was originally delivered in June, and recently entered service.
The jet, one of the first converted Airbus widebodies to be in cargo service under the most recent F regulations, has joined Amazon Air's fleet. The massive cargo powerhouse which does not actually operate its flights but rather contracts cargo service to other carriers, has made an arrangement with legacy Airbus A330 operator Hawaiian Airlines to fly its latest cargo jet across the nation.
German manufacturer EFW has a rich heritage. Based out of Dresden, the company found a niche producing Soviet-designed airliners, fighter jets, and bombers, including the Ilyushin Il-14. The manufacturer also had a major hand in the development of Germany's own airliner, the Baade 152.
The manufacturer's latest endeavour - converting passenger A330s into freighters - has scored a victory with the service entry of Amazon Air's first A330 P2F. Now, EFW has broken into a new market in which it will certainly seek to gain a stronger foothold.
