NYK has installed E-COOL, a next-generation energy-saving fluorescent lighting system produced by Optrom, on six of the car carriers it operates to boost energy efficiency and cost savings.
It said in a release that since April 2012, 13,000 fluorescent lights have been replaced by the lighting system. This year the Japanese shipping company plans to replace 40,000 conventional fluorescent lamps.
The new technology uses a cold cathode fluorescent lamp (CCFL) that is used in LCD monitors. The lights are said to be brighter, consume less power and last longer. A power-consumption saving of 40 per cent is expected compared to the use of conventional fluorescent lamps. The lighting system also reduces CO2 emissions from car carriers during voyages by up to one per cent.
Headquartered in the city of Sendai in Japan's Tohoku area, which was devastated by the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake and tsunami, the company is donating part of the proceeds of E-COOL unit sales to the area to assist with reconstruction. A part of the proceeds from NYK's order will be donated to the NPO Child Line Miyagi based in Sendai for reconstruction support through a charitable trust overseen by the Japan Philanthropic Association.
