FRENCH shipping line, CMA CGM, has reaffirmed its long-standing commitment to protecting the environment, saying its largest and most environmentally-friendly ship in its fleet, the 16,020-TEU Marco Polo, will be followed by the delivery of two sister ships between May and June.
The group has also has finalised the purchase of 50,000 bamboo eco-containers designed to limit the use of rare tropical trees and improve the container's technical qualities. It has also purchased 25,000 light steel containers. The announcement comes amid a week-long celebration of sustainable development initiatives introduced in France.
It says that on its largest ships, the use of eco-containers allows savings of up to one or two tons of fuel per day, representing a reduction of up to 3-6 tons of CO2 emissions.
According to Jacques Saade, chairman and chief executive officer, the battle against climate change, the preservation of the oceans, and the ecological solutions offered to customers are an essential part of the group's activities and organisation.
It said it has implemented concrete actions to minimise the impact of its activities on the environment, and is developing new ecological solutions. For example, the three 16,020-TEU giants are equipped with an electronically controlled engine to reduce CO2 emissions; an "Exhaust Gas Bypass" system, to improve the energy efficiency of the vessel when slow steaming, reducing CO2 emissions by 1.5 per cent at low speeds; a twisted leading edge rudder to improve the hydrodynamics of the vessel (optimisation of the water flow), and reduce energy expenditure as well as CO2 emissions; and a ballast water treatment system.
