AN online webinar has highlighted the benefits and opportunities for maritime trade rising from the maritime single window (MSW) with electronic ship clearance processes in ports, reports Hellenic Shipping News Worldwide.
The single window process will become mandatory for contracting governments to the Facilitation (FAL) Convention on January 1, 2024.
Webinar panelists representing the UN's International Maritime Organisation (IMO), ports, and shipowners recognised the window of opportunities the new requirement will bring to the sector.
Examples include the positive impact on port operations; increased efficiency of ports; time reduction processes and human power working hours; emissions reduction in ports.
The participants noted the success factors when implementing an MSW, including the need for political will; a lead agency; and good cooperation between governments and industry.
The webinar is the first milestone event organised jointly by IMO, the International Association of Ports and Harbours (IAPH), and BIMCO to prepare for the upcoming obligation of the single window in January 2024.
