CONSTRUCTION has commenced on a vast logistics centre, spanning 10 million square feet near the Port of Savannah, reports New York's Journal of Commerce.
This facility, named the Central Point Logistics Centre at Savannah, is situated on 467 acres and is a development by Capital Development Partners.
It is designed to offer cross-dock and CSX rail services, catering to the escalating demands of the port's customer base.
The project, mostly speculative in nature, is strategically positioned seven miles from the port's Garden City Terminal (GCT).
The centre will provide 10,080 TEU of container space, serving as storage for cargo destined for import or export distribution.
The development will unfold in four phases, and the groundbreaking last week marked the initiation of the first phase, with the construction of the first two buildings currently in progress.
Capital Development Partners oversees the project, specialising in port-related developments in the US.
Notably, Georgia-based manufacturer Plastic Express has already secured a lease for a rail-served facility within the complex, covering one million square feet and currently under construction.
This facility, supported by CSX rail services, will facilitate the export of US-made plastic resin, PVC and paper.
Simultaneously, across the street, a 1.5 million-square foot cross dock facility is being built on speculation, expected to be leased by a major retailer, third-party logistics provider, or ocean carrier. Both of these structures are slated for occupancy by mid-2024.
'There's demand out there, and it takes several years to develop a building, so if we want to have product to sell, we need to be ahead of the game and continue to invest in facilities and the land,' said Mr Porter.
