CONTAINER volumes through Virginia Ports increased 4.6 per cent year on year to 210,177 TEU in April, reports the Virginian-Pilot.
"April was the second month we have had with volumes above 200,000 TEU and we expect this become the norm," said the Virginia Port Authority CEO John Reinhart.
"To prepare for this level of volume we continue to invest in cargo conveyance equipment, add members to the operations team, implement technology and improve communications," he said.
Year-to-date, the box volume is up 8.5 per cent year on year. Truck containers have risen 9.2 per cent, rail containers up 9.8 per cent and vessel calls, 2.3 per cent.
January through April, barge containers fell five per cent from the same period a year earlier and breakbulk dropped 20 per cent.
