CONTAINER volumes at India's major state-owned ports increased 3.9 per cent year on year in April, the first month of fiscal year 2015-16, reports Delhi's Transreporter.
This continues the robust growth enjoyed in the last year with total volume at the 12 major ports reaching 660,000 TEU, or 10.2 million tonnes.
Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT), or Nhava Sheva, handled 369,000 TEU, up from 364,000 TEU. The three container terminals in Nhava Sheva together account for 60 per cent of India's total box volume through the 12 ports and 40 per cent of the nation's overall ocean container trade.
Chennai, the second biggest state-owned port, posted a 17 per cent volume increase to 139,000 TEU. Kolkata, including Haldia Dock, was down 2.2 per cent to 44,000 TEU.
Tuticorin Port, now renamed VO Chidambaranar, was up 11.6 per cent to 48,000 TEU. Vallarpadam Container Transshipment Terminal, a DP World facility in Cochin Port, increased 10.7 per cent to 31,000 TEU.
Overall cargo at the 12 majors was up one per cent in April year on year to 48 million tonnes with Kandla leading the way with 6.7 million tonnes followed by Paradip at six million tonnes, JNPT at 5.6 million tonnes, Mumbai at five million tonnes, Chennai at 4.6 million tonnes, Visakhapatnam at four million tonnes and Kolkata at 3.8 million tonnes.
