THE US Air Force is contemplating a significant restructuring, including the elimination of its major command model, reports New York's Aviation Week.
This review, spearheaded by service Secretary Frank Kendall, is centred on assessing the Air Force's capability to engage in a major conflict following years of predominantly lower-intensity engagements.
Space Systems Command commander Lt Gen Michael Guetlein revealed during a Space Force Association conference speech on December 13 that Kendall is poised to implement this change as part of the ongoing initiative initiated in the fall.
'The air force is going to get rid of the major commands structure,' said Mr Guetlein.
'Think about how fundamental that is to the way we fight today and the way we've always thought about the air force. And we're going to step away from what we know as the majcom structure. That's going to be a huge change.'
Following the speech, the air force clarified that the major command change is pre-decisional and only a potential option for Mr Kendall's overall review. In a follow-up briefing, Mr Guetlein clarified his remarks and added that the plan is not 'concrete.'
'Right now, nothing is sacred. We're looking at everything. But, I made it sound like decisions have been made. There have been no decisions made.'
