BRITAIN's Jaguar Land Rover Ltd and Chery Automobile Co, have partnered to form a new joint venture to develop electric vehicles, reports Caixin.
The new models will carry the Freelander badge, a popular compact SUV brand Land Rover first introduced in 1997 but discontinued in 2015. The new electric models will be marketed through a dedicated network in China, with plans for exports, the companies said.
Despite being a respected name in the China luxury car market, Jaguar Land Rover''s sales have lagged behind top-tier brands such as Mercedes-Benz, BMW and Audi. The performance of the Chery Jaguar Land Rover joint venture, founded in 2012 has also fallen short of expectations, with imported models being more popular among Chinese consumers.
Competition in the luxury electric vehicle market is intensifying, particularly from Chinese new energy vehicle companies. The new Freelander series will compete with Huawei Technologies' M9 SUV, priced at more than CNY500,000 (US$69,000), as well as BYD's luxury SUV Fangchengbao.
