THE lives of several men were lost off Kiel that sank the Isle of Man-flagged 3,360-ton general cargo ship Verity when she collided with the Bahamas-flagged 38,699-ton bulk carrier Polesie last Tuesday.
The collision happened at 3am in German Bight some 16 nautical miles north of Langeoog island, East Frisian Islands, while moving on crossing courses, reports the Marine Bulletin of Rostock, Germany that specialises in marine casualties.
The Verity was en route from Bremen to Immingham while the Polesie is en route from Hamburg to La Coruna Spain. The Verity sank soon after collision, last AIS was received at 3.15am.
The Polesie stopped and probably took part in the search and rescue operation, which involved a number of boats and a cruise ship.
Of the seven-man Verity crew, one was rescued, one body was recovered and the others were missing before the search was called off, said the report.
It is understood that the Verity was to give way to Polesie but didn't turn in time to avoid collision and the bulk carrier responded too late.
The Verity's ship manager was the UK's Casper Chartering while the Polesie's manager is Polska Zegulga Morska PP, of Szczecin, Poland.
