The world's first commercial sailing Ro-Ro ship, Neoliner Origin, was launched at RMK Marine Shipyard.Construction of the vessel began in November 2023 for the French shipping company Neoline.
The cargo ship measures 136 meters in length and 24.2 meters in width, featuring 3,000 square meters of sails and 76-meter-high foldable carbon masts. It also has a loading capacity of 1,200 linear meters or 265 twenty-foot containers, with a maximum cargo weight of 5,300 tons.RMK Marine announced that the vessel will reduce fossil fuel consumption by over 80% and "harness the power of wind as its primary propulsion source." Greenhouse gas emissions could be reduced by up to 90%.
This innovative vessel is expected to enter service in the summer of 2025, following its initial sea trials planned for spring. It will operate on a route between Saint-Nazaire and Baltimore, with stopovers in Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon and Halifax.
