DURING a port safety webinar jointly hosted by the International Cargo Handling Coordination Association (ICHCA) and Port technology International, experts highlighted the significant improvement in port worker safety due to advancements in technology, particularly in drivers' cabs, according to its joint communique.
The webinar, titled 'How to Innovate for Workplace Safety in Ports and Terminals,' focused on key issues surrounding workforce safety.
Industry speakers unanimously agreed that technological innovations must be accompanied by the support and collaboration of all port users and stakeholders to ensure the safety of everyone involved.
ICHCA chief executive Richard Steele addressed the attendees and shared alarming statistics.
Since the year 2000, there have been 354 shore-based fatalities globally, including 349 port workers and 20 truckers.
'These numbers emphasise the critical need for the cargo industry to search for ways to enhance health and safety measures,' said Mr Steele.
'The key thing that industry can do is to agree common good practices and then act as champions, role modeling those good values and creating expectations of standards across the industry,' said Mr Steele.
