THE taliban is aiming to boost exports to save the Afghan economy from collapse, declaring humanitarian aid alone won't prevent the country from slipping deeper into poverty, reports Bloomberg News.
'Humanitarian aid cannot solve Afghanistan's economic problems. The only way to achieve economic self-sufficiency is to boost domestic products and export them abroad,' said Taliban deputy foreign minister Sher Mohammad Abbas Stanekzai.
Mr Stanekzai's comments mark a shift where foreign aid makes up 40 per cent of the economy.
The attempt to move toward self-sufficiency comes as Afghanistan has lost access to its foreign reserves of US$9 billion after the US froze them following the Taliban take-over in August.
In 2020, the country imported its essential items worth $9 billion. Exports accounted for $800 million and consisted of agricultural products.
The United Nations (UN) has warned that over half the country's 40 million people are facing acute hunger and a million children could die as a consequence.
Mr Stanekzai again blamed the US for the chaos and called on it to release the funds that belong to the Afghan people.
Under a new measure to avoid the Taliban, the US is planning to deliver aid directly to the Afghan people.
