After the 'Thorco Lineage' ran aground at the northeastern tip of Raroia Atoll, on June 25 a group of experts arrived at the grounding site to analyze the situation of the vessel. The were hoisted onto the 'Thorco Lineage' to consider the salvage operations. A group of divers should also check the extent of damage to the hull and maneuverability. There was no pollution, only the coral soup that the vessel's grounding had caused was seen around the ship, but the experts needed a much more detailed assessment of the condition of the hull. The weather forecast was good for the next five days. The cargo consisted of 20,000 tonnes of powdered zinc, and the ship had on board another 500 tons of fuel oil for the propulsion. A tug has just left Santiago and should arrive in Raroia within 10 days. In the meantime, the country and the state mobilized all means at their disposal to avoid any type of pollution and limit the impact on the environment. It was still unclear why the ship suffered engine failure two days before the accident and sent no distress call.
