Specialized vessels of HEBO Maritime have cleaned up half of the more than 200 tons fuel oil in the port of Rotterdam that leaked from the 'Bow Jubail' on June 23. The placards of oil were relatively easy to get out of the water, but it probably will take weeks before all the slurry has been cleaned up. Many birds have been smeared. To clean the animals a tent will be placed at the Maeslantkering in Maassluis. The first birds arrive there in the evening of june 25. At Vogelklas Karel Schot in south Rotterdam at least 250 swans from the polluted area have been collected. Dozens of ships have also become dirty. A hull wash installation has been set up in the Geulhaven in the evening of June 24 for barges. Later, another ship wash for seagoing vessels will be added. The cleaning work in the Botlek after the oil leakage of last weekend was in full swing. More than 80 people wre currently working in specially designed washing streets to make sea and inland vessels oil-free. Another 700 oil-stained swans floated on the water of the Nieuwe Waterweg. These birds can only be treated once the emergency reception center of Rijkswaterstaat at the Maeslantkering is ready. Employees of Akka's goose paradise in Dalen/Drenthe and the animal ambulance from Emmen have rescued almost 50 swans from the water in the port of Rotterdam. The Dutch Safety Board was conducting an exploratory investigation into the oil spill in the Botlek. The damage was estimated to be around five million Euro. The tanker remained stationary in pos. 51° 53.24' N 004° 18.65' E.
