OMAN's salalah port has completed its expansion plan, increasing its container handling capacity from five million to six million TEU annually, reports the Oman Observer.
The job was done with the arrival of the final four large cranes capping a total investment of US$300 million.
Scott Salman, the executive director of operations at the port, said the cranes will significantly reduce the time ships spend in the port, facilitate quicker access to the upper decks of vessels, and enhance the port's ability to attract the world's largest ships.
Starting in August, the four new cranes will begin contributing to the port's productivity, increasing the total number of cranes at Salalah Port from 21 to 27 by the end of the year.
These new electric cranes, among the largest of their kind globally, set new standards for size and efficiency. They can handle ships with a depth of up to 26 containers and have a maximum lifting capacity of 105 tons, enabling them to service the largest containerships currently in operation.
In addition to the cranes, the expansion includes 12 hybrid rubber-tyred gantry cranes, two stacking cranes, six empty container handling cranes, and 30 trucks and trailers, further supporting the port's enhanced operational capacity.?
