THE British Ministry of Defence (MoD) has signed a new agreement with World Fuel Services to procure an additional 5.2 million litres (1.4 million gallons) of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), reports New Jersey's AIN (Aviation International News).
This announcement by the US-based supplier comes after a previous contract to supply 4 million litres of saf to British military forces from November 2023 to February 2024.
The fuel provided is a blend of 40 per cent sustainable aviation fuel sourced from Neste, with the renewable component derived from used cooking oil or animal fat.
This new order, spanning from July to September, is aligned with the MoD's carbon reduction objectives outlined in its Defence Operation Energy Strategy published in December 2023.
'Establishing the routine procurement of aviation fuel blended with SAF is a critical early step to achieving Defence's Net Zero Aviation strategy,' said Air Vice-Marshal Shaun Harris.
'This has been developed to improve the resilience of Defence's energy supply chains, as well as achieving the UK government's carbon dioxide emissions reduction trajectory from 2020 to 2050,' he said.
Said World Fuel Services (WFS) senior vice president John Wynn: 'Our experience in defense fuel supply chains was honed in Afghanistan, where we supported NATO.
'Most recently, we were awarded the Australian Defence Forces' deployable bulk fuel distribution system. We applaud the RAF for their leading efforts demonstrated by raising the bar with larger volumes and longer commitments,' said Mr Wynn.
