A CUSTOMISED Damen Cutter Suction Dredger (CSD) 450 has been delivered to the Russia's Arctic gas fields in the Yamal Peninsula, reports the American Journal of Transportation.
Should the pipeline to the West be cut during escalating tensions there would be greater reliance on exporting LNG using larger tankers than can be used along the western Northern Sea Route to Murmansk.
The new Dutch CSD has to perform various capital dredging projects within the ice-free, short time window available along the world's longest estuary otherwise known at the Gulf or Orb.
The contract for the CSD450, named Zephir, was signed in December 2020.
Due to the short spring and summer season, the delivery time was critical and had to take place before the ice started to return.
The upgrade of the CSD450 was carried out at the specialist Damen Dredging yard in the Netherlands.
Zephir was transported fully dismounted due to the journey it had to take to the Gulf of Ob, which is located 2,000 kilometre north-east of Moscow.
The Damen CSD has performed several capital dredging jobs in the region, including deepening small rivers and stretches of the Gulf of Ob.
