BRAZIL's ports ministry has signed a BRL210 million (US$70.5 million) dredging deal with the Dutch dredgers Van Oord and Boskalisto to deepen the channel to Rio de Janeiro from 12.4 to 14 metres.
The two Dutch dredging companies will conduct studies and soundings of Guanabara Bay over the next five months and complete the design for the channel and turning basin. The dredging itself will take another six months.
Ships of 9,600 TEU will be able to access the harbour when the project is completed by mid-2016 allowing Rio to be an alternative to Sao Paulo, reported Newark's Journal of Commerce.
"This is great news for all those involved in the container sector here," said Luiz Henrique Carneiro, president of Multi-Rio, one of the two container terminals in Rio.
"This will allow us to handle bigger vessels of more than 9,000 TEU, which is an increase over the 6,000-TEU ships we can handle today," said Mr Carneiro.
Apart from depth, dredging also will permit the maximum length of vessel to rise from 295 metres to 340 metres, and the maximum beam to increase to 48 metres from 42.
