MANILA port operations have returned to normal after a visit from Pope Francis last month disrupted waterfront business, reports Newark's Journal of Commerce.
But despite these assurances from the Philippine Ports Authority and the presidential palace, business leaders remain sceptical that operations have "completely normalised," according to the Philippine Daily Inquirer.
Yard utilisation levels had already reached a standstill rate of 97 per cent shortly before the papal visit January 15 most the lingering consequences of a long-rescinded daytime truck ban by the city of Manila in February last year.
During Pope Francis' visit, outbound cargo was banned and truck routes were closed throughout the country. Yards were flooded with empty containers, said Edwin Lacierda, a spokesman for President Benigno Aquino.
