Shippers are also using dedicated trucking to influence how customers order freight and how they move it. They're also using dedicated more often in both long-term and short-term contracts for specific niches of their business.
Omaha-based Werner Enterprises increased 2020 fourth-quarter dedicated trucking revenues, excluding fuel surcharges, by nine per cent to US$258 million, and expanded its dedicated fleet by 230 trucks, while cutting 110 trucks from its traditional one-way irregular-route fleet.
Reefer truckload carrier Marten Transport, fourth-quarter dedicated volume rose 25.9 per cent, compared with a 14.3 per cent increase in total volumes. Dedicated revenue at the Mondovi, Wisconsin-based company was up 21 per cent to nearly $275 million.
JB Hunt Transport added 192 trucks to its dedicated division in the fourth quarter, partly to meet current demand and in expectation of strong demand for additional dedicated service in 2021. At Werner, dedicated revenue per truck is expected to grow three to five per cent in 2021.
