THAILAND's Regional Container Lines has reported a second quarter net loss of THB132 million (US$4.2 million) compared with a year-on-year net profit of THB5 million.
The intra-Asia carrier also posted an quarterly operating loss of THB165 million, the result of overcapacity and weak rates, despite a gain on sales of fixed assets.
Quarterly revenue fell by 12 per cent year on year to THB3.2 million, cushioned by a two per cent reduction in the cost of freight operations.
RCL's quarterly shipper-owned container volume fell six per cent year on year to 254,818 TEU, and for carrier-owned boxes, throughput slipped four per cent to 273,534 TEU, resulting in a second quarter decline of five per cent overall to 528,352 TEU.
The group also disposed of some old containers in the quarter, which translated to a disposal gain of THB35 million, compared with a disposal gain of THB38 million year on year.
