ASSOCIATED British Port's (ABP) Port of Southampton has been rated as the 20th most productive port in the world with an average of 71 container moves per hour, making it the most productive port in Europe as no other on the continent made it into the top 20.
As Britain's top performing container terminal, according to a study by Newark's Journal of Commerce, the port far outshines its closest rival, Felixstowe, which clocked up 49 container moves per hour. The data was compiled by charting more than 100,000 port calls at 400 ports in 2012.
The strong performance comes as the container terminal operated by DP World Southampton is halfway into a four-year improvement programme, using a teamwork approach and new technology to raise performance levels. The terminal now wracks up 177 moves per hour on the ultra large containerships.
The terminal is in the midst of a GBP150 million (US$234.4 million) capacity expansion project that aims to ensure the facility will be able to handle the world's biggest ships long into the future. The project involves extensive dredging works, construction of a new 500-metre quay and the installation of four new cranes. The development project is scheduled for completion in January 2014.
"We have put performance and productivity at the very heart of our operation and we are all committed to driving our service to the next level. I think it is this commitment that gives us the edge," said ABP Port director Southampton Doug Morrison.
"There's been a huge amount of capital investment and hard work from the team here. We are all extremely proud of the reputation for customer service we have built, but no one here is under any illusions that we can afford to rest on our laurels."
