PIRATES nearly disrupted a special delivery for the Waikato Regional Council, reports New Zealand Herald.
The council had ordered two large-scale, fish-friendly Archimedes screw pumps from the Netherlands, which were shipped to New Zealand via the Suez Canal and the red Sea.
These pumps, intended to replace four outdated, non-fish-friendly pumps, are part of the flood protection infrastructure.
Project manager Stephen Wilson stated the ship carrying the pumps was originally scheduled to arrive in New Zealand the day before Christmas but was delayed due to lingering logistical impacts from the Covid crisis.
Wilson had been anxiously tracking the ship when he learned it had successfully navigated through the Suez Canal and across the Red Sea, just days before pirates forced ship operators to re-route.
'There was a container ship that ... got hit by a rocket or [almost did], and then it happened again ... all the shipping companies diverted their routes after that, taking a lengthy detour of 3,500 nautical miles, 6,500 kilometres, around Cape of Good Hope,' said Mr Wilson.
